On the far left corner

Mondays), one of the
most elegant buildings in all of Mexico
City—the time-warp
interior could be a set
for a Steven Spielberg
movie. The grand
cast-iron staircase
leads up to a land-ing decorated with
paintings and stained
glass panels by famed
19th-century artist
José María Velasco,
whose panoramic landscape paintings can be seen in the Museo Nacional. (The staircase
is usually roped off, but if it’s not busy and you ask nicely, they may let
you go up.)
